Christian Dior was born January 21, 1905 in Granville, Manche, Basse-Normandie, and became one of the most influential French fashion designers.  During World War II, Christian Dior dressed the wives of the Nazi officers and French collaborators.  In 1945 he went into business for himself.  The actual name of the line was Corolle (roughly petal in French).  Dior's designs became more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric.  He was a master at creating shapes and silhouettes; Dior is quoted as saying "I have designed flower women."  His “new look” revolutionized women's dress and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world after World War II.  Dior died of a heart attack on October 24, 1957 at the age of 52.  His line lives on and includes not only clothing but designer handbags and various other products.
